Doctor Who - Season Two: RYLAN CLARKE (Credit: BBC Studios (James Pardon))

The BBC have released a new trailer for the forthcoming second series of Doctor Who starring Ncuti Gatwa, Varada Sethu and Millie Gibson.

The two minute trailer features a host of guest stars who will appear during the eight episodes, including Rylan Clarke (playing himself as the co-host of the Interstellar Song Contest), Alan Cumming (the voice of villainous cartoon character, Mr Ring-a-Ding), Caoilfhionn Dunne, Christopher Chung, Evelyn Miller, Ariyon Bakare, Julie Dray and Jonah Hauer-King. It also sees the return of regulars Anita Dobson, Bonnie Langford and Jemma Redgrave,

Rylan Clarke:

As a massive Whovian, getting the call to be in Doctor Who was a call I’ve always dreamed of getting. The episode is all my favourite things about the show with an added song contest set in space. It really is a dream come true. I can’t wait for everyone to see it. It really is going to be out of this world.

Evelyn Miller:

I’m so delighted to be joining the Doctor Who team. It was such a feature of my childhood, the memory of curling up on the sofa with my brother and watching the Weeping Angels episode from behind a pillow still makes me laugh. We were terrified. The love and passion that’s gone into this series is so clear. I can’t wait for people to see it!

Ariyon Bakare:

As a kid, I’d run around the house chasing my little sister, arms raised, shouting, I am a Dalek! Back then, I never imagined I’d even meet a Doctor, let alone guest star in the show. So, returning to the Whoniverse for Season 2 is an absolute treat. I can’t wait for everyone to see what we’ve created.

Caoilfhionn Dunne:

I am so grateful to have been asked to be a part of this exciting second season of Doctor Who. As a longtime fan of the show, it has been a dream come true. And to get to work with such an amazing gang, Ncuti and Varada, such a wonderful duo, this absolutely stellar cast and such a supportive and hardworking crew. I couldn't have asked for a better gang of folk to have hurtled through the Whoniverse with.

Julie Dray:

I am so excited to be joining the cast of Doctor Who, an iconic show with such a rich legacy. I had such an amazing time working alongside Rylan while wearing some beautiful prosthetics, and can't wait for audiences to see the spectacular Interstellar Song Contest be brought to life! Voilà!

Doctor Who Season Two: The Doctor (NCUTI GATWA) (Credit: BBC Studios (Danny Kasirye))

The BBC has confirmed that Doctor Who will return to screens worldwide on Saturday 12th April 2025.

The eight-part series will be screened on BBC One and Player in the UK and on Disney + worldwide. It stars Ncuti Gatwa as The Doctor and Varanda Sethu as Belinda Chandra

It has also been confirmed that the Scottish actor Alan Cumming will feature in the second episode as the voice of Mr Ring-a-Ding. Cumming previously played King James in the 2018 story The Witchfinders.

Doctor Who Season Two: ALAN CUMMING (Credit: BBC Studios (Josh Going))Doctor Who Season Two: Mr Ring-A-Ding (ALAN CUMMING) (Credit: BBC Studios (BBC Studios/Disney/Bad Wolf))

Mr Ring-a-Ding is a happy, funny, singalong cartoon, who lives in Sunny Town with his friend Sunshine Sally. However, in 1952, after years of repeats in cinemas across the land, Mr Ring-a-Ding suddenly looks beyond the screen and sees the real world outside - and the consequences are terrifying.

Only Alan Cumming could give a runaway cartoon so much wit, malice, danger and fun. He makes the whole universe of Doctor Who wilder and madder than ever, and it’s an absolute honour to welcome him on board the TARDIS.

The new season also stars Millie Gibson as Ruby Sunday as well as previously announced guest stars Rose Ayling-Ellis, Anita Dobson, Christopher Chung, Michelle Greenidge, Jonah Hauer-King, Ruth Madeley, Jemma Redgrave, and Susan Twist.

BBC Radiophonic Workshop Archive Available to Musicians

Thursday, 20 February 2025 - Reported by Marcus
BBC Radiophonic Workshop (Credit: BBC)

The archive of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop will be made available for the first time for use by musical artists and producers, passing on a legacy that helped invent electronic music and sampling.

The Radiophonic Workshop was created in 1957 by the BBC to provide music and audio for Radio and Television. Delia Derbyshire created the original Doctor Who Theme music at the workshop in 1963 working from a score by Ron Grainer. It was responsible for most of the special sounds used in the original series and a sizable chunk of the incidental music. It was closed by the BBC in 1998.

In collaboration with Spitfire Audio and BBC Studios, an unprecedented package of samples will now be released from the Radiophonic Workshop.

From scraping pianos and hitting lampshades to manipulating tape loops with milk bottles, the Workshop's unconventional methods produced a distinctive sonic signature that continues to inspire artists. Its work paved the way for much of the popular music of the 21st century and has been cited as an influence by everyone from Brian Eno to Orbital to Hans Zimmer. The sample library will now be available to musicians and producers, preserving an important musical heritage for generations to come.

Composer, sound designer and Radiophonic Workshop archivist Mark Ayres said:

As a kid born in the 1960s, I realised there was a department at the BBC that was purely for making bonkers noises. It blew my mind!

With exclusive access to the Workshop's archives, tools, and hardware at the legendary Maida Vale Studios, and guidance from Radiophonic Workshop archivist Mark Ayres and other Workshop members, Spitfire Audio has captured the essence of this sonic playground. The library features sounds from the original tapes, as well as new recordings and experiments by Workshop members and associates, including Mark AyresKieron PepperBob EarlandDick MillsPaddy KingslandRoger LimbGlynis Jones and Peter Howell.

Mark Ayres said:

I'm the youngest member of the core Radiophonic Workshop – and I'm 64! We're not going to be around forever. It was really important to leave a creative tool, inspired by our work, for other people to use going forward. I hope we've made an instrument that will inspire future generations.

This instrument is all formed from the work, processes and equipment that the Workshop created and used. You know, sampling now really looks like sampling then, but with a few more twiddles. I've been saying for years that Workshop composers such as Delia Derbyshire and John Baker were really samplists.

One of its biggest customers was schools programming, where graphs and diagrams came alive in experimental audio – a rich source of inspiration for artists such as Boards of Canada. A new generation was hearing the wonders of an electronic sound that was experimental, but also relatable – built on the manipulation of real sounds.

Mark Ayres said:

So it was BBC schools, radio and television, it was Blue Peter, it was Doctor Who. And then, if you were allowed to stay up late and watch a documentary such as a World About Us, that would probably have a Radiophonic Workshop soundtrack. You really couldn't get away from it.

Reanimating this legacy, the machines, performances and archive sounds of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop are now available in the first sample-library VST (Virtual Studio Technology) to capture the Workshop’s essence – with unprecedented access to its home of 40 years: London’s Maida Vale studios.

Harry Wilson, Spitfire Audio’s Head of Recording, said:

We're not just looking back at what the members were doing way back when. We're projecting a strand of their work into the future and saying: if the Workshop was engaged with a similar process now, what would it sound like?

While the Workshop was a physical place where the artists got their hands and ears dirty, the archive materials will be available in Spitfire Audio’’s Solar engine. Musicians will be able to use modern techniques of bending, stretching and morphing to create something new, as well as having access to a variety of microphones, the EMT turntable and Rogers loudspeakers made especially for the BBC, including the Maida Vale plate and spring reverbs, modular synthesizers, tape machines, EMS Vocoder, Echo chamber, Roland Vocoder SVC-350 and Eventide H-3000. The package is divided into Archive Content, Found Sounds, Junk Percussion, Tape Loops, Synths and a Miscellany.

Dominic Walker, Global Business Director for BBC Studios said:

We are thrilled to be collaborating once again with Spitfire Audio in bringing the legendary sounds of the BBC Radiophonic Workshop to a new generation of musicians and composers with this valuable online library

Key Features include

  • Authentic sounds from the BBC Radiophonic Workshop archives.
  • Deeply sampled one-shots, loops, and multi-samples.
  • New recordings and experiments by Workshop members and associates.
  • Spitfire Audio’s powerful SOLAR engine with gate sequencer and vast effects suite.
  • Wide range of sounds, including archival content, found sounds, junk percussion, tape loops, and vintage synthesisers.
  • 13 different signal chains used for sound capture.

The Spitfire Audio BBC Radiophonic Workshop VST gives musicians and producers a collection of samples that they can use when making their own music. It includes vintage synthesisers, tape loops, found sounds, iconic archives and new performances from Workshop members.

The Spitfire Audio BBC Radiophonic Workshop VST will be available for £149/€179/$199 from 19 February 2025 at http://spitfireaudio.com/bbc-radiophonic-workshop/. An introductory price of £119/€143/$159 is available until 6 March 2025.

The Ninth Doctor and Rose back together for Audio Adventures

Saturday, 15 February 2025 - Reported by Marcus
Christopher Eccleston and Billie Piper (Credit: Oliver Bowring / Big Finish)

Christopher Eccleston and Billie Piper are returning to the roles of the Ninth Doctor and Rose Tyler in a brand-new series of full-cast Doctor Who audio dramas from Big Finish

The Doctor and Rose want you to come with them!

Back to the Powell Estate, where the Doctor’s past returns to haunt him, and out into the universe where enemies old and new are waiting...

In 2005, Eccleston and Piper took a whole new generation of Doctor Who fans on the trip of a lifetime into time and space.

Twenty years later, the trip continues, as they’re set to star in a brand-new series of twelve, hour-long, full-cast audio adventures, due to be released from August 2025.

The news was announced to a packed hall at the world's premier Doctor Who convention, Gallifrey One in Los Angeles.

Christopher Eccleston said:

I am so happy to be back recording more adventures for the NinthDoctor with Billie. I don't think my Doctor exists without Rose. He's a 'one man, one companion' kind of alien. We've explored him on his own at Big Finish, as a loner. But there's resilience bravery and a deep empathy for Billie as Rose, that's why I do this. They complete each other.

Billie Piper added:

I can’t think of a better time for Rose to reunite with her first Doctor than now. Twenty years after she first ran into the TARDIS and towards adventure, here we are again, me and Chris, ready to have fun facing the universe – and the monsters – together.

Producer Matt Fitton said:

Twenty years after the Ninth Doctor and Rose burst onto our screens, Christopher Eccleston and Billie Piper are back with that brilliant dynamic – the Doctor showing Rose the universe, and Rose showing him the best of humanity.

Across 12 episodes, slotting neatly into that 2005 series, we have more Jackie Tyler, more Powell Estate, plus friends and enemies old and new through time and space. Our writers have done an amazing job recapturing the spirit of that very special season, and Chris and Billie have embraced these scripts with delight and gusto. They're having a blast, back on that trip of a lifetime – and they sound fantastic!

Big Finish listeners can now pre-order Doctor Who – The Ninth Doctor Adventures, starting at £9.99 per story (download to own) or £11.99 (download to own + collector’s edition CD) exclusively from bigfinish.com.

Please note: the collector’s edition CDs are strictly limited to 1,500 copies each and will not be repressed. A complete series multibuy bundle of all twelve releases is also available to pre-order at the discounted price of £102 (download to own) or £126 (download to own + collectors edition CD), again exclusively from the Big Finish website.
